John Popley, who is currently chair of the Shepshed Town Council, has been selected as the Liberal Democrat candidate for the County Council by-election on 4th October. John, who is 56 and has lived in Shepshed for over 50 years, is married with 3 children - all of whom have attended Shepshed schools. He has ten years' experience as a Town Councillor and is the longest serving governor on Shepshed High School. John's wife Cynthia, is also a Town and Charnwood Borough councillor for Shepshed East.

Over the last year, John has been campaigning hard to stop proposed new housing developments on the Garendon estate, down-grading of the local police station, proposed closure of the local post offices and the proposed landfill site at Newhurst Quarry.

After become the largest party on the Town Council in the elections last May, John believes that the Liberal Democrats are the growing political force in Shepshed. Says John "A vote for me on October 4th will ensure that Shepshed has a strong voice".
